While on Kauai, I stumbled across something amazing: the Kauai Humane Society’s field trip program, where visitors can take adoptable dogs out for a day of adventure. It’s designed to give the dogs a break from the shelter—and give them a chance to charm someone into taking them home.
Spoiler alert: it worked.
I showed up that morning with hiking shoes and zero expectations. They handed me a leash and introduced me to him—a scruffy, soulful pup with curious eyes and a tail that never stopped wagging. We hit the trail together, wandered through lush green paths, chased waves on the beach, and yes, shared some shave ice like true tourists.
By the end of the day, I was in love.
The Moment I Knew
When I went to drop him off, I knew it couldn't be goodbye forever. I mean, did you see those amber eyes? He had to come home with us.
And a few weeks later, after lots of phone calls, travel forms, and a very long flight—he was hanging in the backyard in Connecticut, finally home.
